An important first step in healing a strained relationship or improving an already good one! When a couple decides to go to couples therapy, one of the partners may be more hesitant, or have doubts about the process and the ability for therapy to help. Therefore, it is essential that you take the time to do some research and be sure the therapist you choose has specific training in couples therapy. That way you are more likely to have a successful experience, rather than a disappointing one that reinforces the hesitant partner’s doubts that therapy could help.

There are a variety of reasons a couple might choose to attend couples therapy.

A couple might need help improving their communication skills, work on eliminating negative relationship patterns, adjust to life together as empty nesters, need help repairing their relationship after an affair, or even tuning up an already good relationship.

Regardless of the reason you choose to attend couple’s therapy, it’s essential to choose a therapist that specializes in working with couples and has certifications within their area of specialty.

For example, Imago Therapists have undergone extensive training; their work has been recorded, monitored, and improved through a rigorous feedback process before they receive their certification. Therefore, you can be assured of an excellent skill set with a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist.

  1. Good couples therapists are reliably safe, warm, and helpful in their approach and do not blame, shame, criticize, or take sides. Imago therapy meets couples where they are, using positive communication to coach couples into effective, deeply connecting, and healing conversations. Fundamentally, we believe healing happens in safe conversation.
  2. In couples therapy, Imago identifies and works with relational patterns, dynamics, and reactivity. We help couples understand the root of relational pain and move toward healing. We believe strongly that growth and healing happen in a relationship, and we teach couples how through safe, connecting dialogues and exercises.
  3. As you select and work with a good therapist, the focus will be on safety and trust.  Developing a trusting relationship will allow you and your partner to open up in a deeper understanding of one another.  A good therapist will coach your partner to hear and validate your concerns, ultimately healing the root of your pain.
  4. Imago Therapists are skilled in working with couples conflict.  We believe that conflict is growth trying to happen within the relationship. Conflict is inevitable and not to be feared in a relationship.

The bottom line –  Be sure your potential therapist is well trained, well-credentialed, and specializes in couples’ work. Just like you’ll need a specialist for a life-threatening medical issue, you’ll need to select a Licensed and Certified Couples Therapist.
